2010 Innovators of the Year Award Presented by Virginia Inventors Forum

The Virginia Inventors Forum (VIF) had over thirty (30) submissions from Virginia businesses for the 2010 Innovator of the Year Award.  VIF will present the 2010 Innovator of the Year Award during the 13th Annual Hampton Roads Technology Night to be held on May 6, 2010 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.   VIF extends appreciation to the Hampton Roads Technology Council for allowing VIF to partner with HRTC and others during Tech Night.  For more information on Tech Night and HRTC, please visit

Second Place Finalists (there was a tie and these are presented in no particular order)

  • Leonard W. Winchester, Jr., PH.D. and Nee-Yin Chou from CW Optics, “Optical Imaging Blood Circulation Velocities” (Seaford, VA)
  • Troy H. Lapetina from The Nathan Group, “Rapid Access Tool-Armored Vehicle Rescue and Breaching Other Ballistically Protected Spaces” (Williamsburg/James City County, VA)

First Place Winner:

  • Christina J. Snyder and Timothy J. Ladison from Aseptic Technologies, LLC, inventing the “Polymer Operating Room Transparent Storage (PORTS)” (Williamsburg/James City County, VA)

For excellence and dedication to supporting inventors, VIF also presented a 2010 Volunteer Achievement Award to:

Fourth Annual USPTO Design Day Open House and Conference

The American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Intellectual Property Owners Association, the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law and the Industrial Designers Society of America will co-sponsor Design Day 2010 – The Art of Design, an annual open house and conference for design patent practitioners and design examiners.  The day-long event will be held at USPTO Headquarters, in the Madison Auditorium.

This program will begin at 9:00 a.m. and is an opportunity for managers, design examiners and the design patent bar to exchange ideas and to educate each other on important topics affecting design patent practice. Topics for discussion include the integration of aesthetics, commercial appeal and intellectual property considerations into product design, the role of the USPTO Solicitor’s Office in design patent practice, litigating design cases in US District Courts, and the recent decisions in Seaway Trading Corp. v. Walgreens Corp, Crocs v. ITC, and Richardson v. Stanley Works.

Date: 9 September 2009, Wednesday 6 PM registration, meeting starts at 6:30PM

For members and newly joining members only (see membership page for fees)

Inventors Forum holds 10 regular Member’s Assistance Meetings (January through October)

WHERE: James City County Library, 7770 Croaker Road, Williamsburg, VA

WHEN: Registration at 6PM, meeting starts at 6:30PM.  This “members only” meeting.  The meeting usually lasts about 2 1/2 hours.

FEE: Door fees are $5 for members. Non-members can join at this meeting. Initial membership fees are $50 per year, half price for seniors 65+, full time students and disabled.

NOTES: Everyone must sign a confidentialty agreemeent. Inventor presentations with feedback from the whole group is focus with industry and professional panel members to assist with feedback. Refreshments are next and then inventors can meet in smaller groups where they can get specific help with their inventions.
Members are encouraged to bring any items or materials like books, software, directories, or catalogs etc. that could be helpful to others.

We are a non-profit group with no paid positions and the success of the group is totally dependent on what YOU bring to the meetings. So please share any helpful information you have. The hard working volunteers who keep VIF going appreciate any and all assistance.
